I’ve been looking into modifying a standard 02b case to accept a larger od bearing, also been looking at ball races as opposed to rollers but that adds a new dimension of fun with expansion & thrust (normally controlled by the pair of taper bearings by the pinion gear T: )Īlso, don’t forget the crownwheel to differential fixings, standard is riveted but vw does a kit of ht bolts/nuts& washers to upgrade thisA:Īs to lsd (& quaife’s waste Of energy, I mean atb ) I believe that zf made plate type lsd’s for the 02b, sorta uncommon maybe but they will be available, try looking in Germany or Scandinavia for ex Emergancy service supplies:* The 02b’s ‘output shaft’ (or pinion as I refer to it as) has a weak bearing specification, something brought foreword from its origins as a car gearbox I:Ĭommon point of failure due to low oil level & age, also compounded by swapping the 5th gear pair with a higher ratio that helps ‘spread’ the shafts increasing bearing demise :* Therefore, for engines with significantly improved performance, I would recommend to carry out this change. With the increasing performance of the Volkswagen engines, this fault was recognized and since 2008, the bearing is replaced with the bearing with a diameter of the external ring of 48, which can already withstand a higher load. The matter is that the original roller bearing with the diameter of 46 mm has a too weak wall of the outer ring and if the engine has a higher performance, the outer ring is deformed due to output wheel deflection, creates a play and this play results in the gearbox defect. It is necessary to consider that the gearbox 02A is designed for the torque of 250Nm, if the engine has a higher torque, the wheels can withstand it but the deflection of the output shaft can be so high that it can finally create a play in the roller bearing, which can cause a defect of the gear. The play in the bearing is increased either with the increasing mileage or is the consequence of the increased engine performance. Life of the gearbox 02B is influenced the most by extensive play in the roller bearing of the output shaft.
Gearboxes 02G and 02B are each totally different, you can't swap anything! I've sent EuroTuning an email but any other information would be great. This is the post I read suggesting that some light modification could help and go a long way.
I can't keep putting a new box on every 3-6 months.
So, does anyone on here know where I can get upgrades done, or what other box/hybrid options there are. Its likely they offer some advantage but the output shaft bearing weakness seems more detrimental to reliability than the get. Quaffe offer O2J LSD and gets but they are only rated to the standard box torque. I've joined various pages on Facebook but nobody yet to my knowledge has found a stronger box option for the T4 without going up to the 350Nm 02G (different bolt patterns to the T4 diesel so wont fit).ĭoes anybody on here offer a gearbox upgrade package with selector forks I have a 1.8T which has a popular bolt pattern and some of the T5 boxes look like they might bolt on. See here, a post from Eurotuning (scroll to the bottom of this post if easier) I've read that the bearings on the output shaft are weak and can be upgraded by machining in a larger bearing. Some even using a Limited Slip Differential from Peloquin. I've read that the box is rated to 250Nm which is useless, that 02M internals fit and that hybrid boxes can be made using different internals. I have a T4 with an O2J gearbox running iro 300bhp.ĭo any guru's or any tuning companies on the forum offer upgrade options for the O2J? That or the information goes so far over my head I have no idea. I say this with the best intentions as many of the threads I've found regarding contain replies such as "I think I heard that a guy used O2M" or "A guy I know used a x, y & z I think" haha. Please only post specific information here if you know the information is 100% correct and try to explain it in layman's terms.
